Punta Cana is the value play in South Asian destination weddings. Room rates run below comparable Mexican properties, the resorts are newer, and several of them have built dedicated South Asian wedding programmes rather than adapting a generic package.
We have run a 175-guest Hindu wedding at Hard Rock Punta Cana where guests arrived from India, England, the United States and Canada and stayed between five and fifteen days. Every event, from Mehndi to Mandap to reception, was held on property. The Pandit Ji flew in from New York. That is the shape of a Punta Cana wedding: everyone in one place, nobody in a taxi.
The catch is flight access. Punta Cana (PUJ) has fewer nonstop routes from the west coast than Cancun does, so a Bay Area or Vancouver guest list will often be connecting. For an east coast or Ontario-heavy list it is frequently the better choice.
Punta Cana International (PUJ) is well served nonstop from New York, Newark, Toronto and Montreal, with more limited nonstop service from Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. West coast guests will usually connect. Most resorts sit fifteen to forty minutes from the terminal.
The Dominican Republic permits legal civil marriage for non-residents with apostilled and Spanish-translated birth certificates, single-status affidavits and passports, typically requiring documents to be submitted several weeks in advance. Many couples still choose to complete the legal marriage at home. Confirm the current document list with the resort's wedding coordinator.
Canadian and US citizens enter on a tourist card included in the airfare. Indian passport holders may enter without a Dominican visa if holding a valid US, Canadian, Schengen or UK visa. Verify each guest's status individually rather than assuming.
