Weddings and luxury travel

The honeymoon after your destination wedding

You are already abroad, already exhausted, and already holding a long haul ticket. Planned properly, the honeymoon costs less and works better when it is built at the same time as the wedding rather than four months afterwards.

Do not leave the day after the wedding

The most common mistake is flying out the morning after the reception. You will have been awake for four days, you will be saying goodbye to two hundred people, and you will spend the first three days of the honeymoon asleep.

Build in a buffer. Two nights at the wedding resort after the guests leave, in a different and better room, is the single best value decision in the whole trip. The property is quiet, the staff already know you, and the rate after a wedding block is usually negotiable.

Three ways to structure it

Stay and move

Two nights at the wedding resort, then a short flight to somewhere with a different character. From Cancun that means Tulum, Merida and the cenotes, Belize, or the Pacific coast. From Punta Cana it means a domestic hop or Saint Lucia. Cheapest option, shortest travel, works with a two week window.

Go long from where you are

Use the wedding as the first leg of a bigger trip. Mexico or the Caribbean into Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia or Argentina. Makes sense when you have three weeks and are not returning to work immediately.

Delay it deliberately

Take four quiet nights at the wedding resort now and go properly six months later, when the weather window is right for the destination you actually want. Better for Maldives, safari and Japan, all of which are seasonal and none of which pair well with a Caribbean departure.

The practical details people miss

  • Name on the ticket. If you are changing your name, do not do it between the wedding and the honeymoon. Travel on the passport you have and change everything afterwards.
  • Luggage. You will have wedding outfits, gifts and décor with you. Send them home with family rather than dragging three extra suitcases across two more countries.
  • Insurance. A wedding policy and a travel policy are different products. Make sure the honeymoon legs are covered, especially if you are in hurricane season.
  • Cash and cards. Tell your bank you will be in two or three countries. Card blocks on the second leg are common.
  • Recovery day. Land home at least one full day before either of you returns to work. Nobody has ever regretted this.

Plan it with the wedding

When we plan your wedding, the honeymoon is quoted alongside it. That lets us route the flights as one trip, negotiate the post block nights while we still have leverage with the resort, and make sure the two halves do not fight each other.
