We have run weddings in both. The honest answer is that this decision is mostly determined by where your guests live, not by which coastline is prettier. Below is what actually separates them, from an agency that has contracted at both.
Choose Cancun if your guest list is spread across North America, if you need capacity above 300, or if you have elderly relatives who should not face a long transfer. Choose Punta Cana if your list is concentrated on the east coast or in Ontario, if budget discipline matters, or if you want a newer resort product for the same money.

A Hindu wedding with roughly 50 guests from London, 20 from the USA and 75 from across Canada. Private airport transfers, exclusive check-in, Sangeet and Mehndi in one of the resort's eight ballrooms, ceremony at the Toucan Gazebo with Pandit Ji flown from Canada, reception in the largest ballroom, and an after-party at the onsite club. Golfers among the guests played the resort course during downtime. We also ran an intimate Sikh wedding here for 75.
A Hindu wedding with guests from India, England, the United States and Canada. Bride's family from Canada, groom's from the US, Pandit Ji flown in from New York. Guests stayed five to fifteen days. Sangeet under the stars, beachside ceremony, ballroom reception. Because every restaurant sits inside the all-inclusive plan, guests ate well all week without reaching for a wallet.
Both weddings worked. The difference was not the destination. It was that in each case the guest list matched the flight map.
