Not every destination wedding needs a passport stamp and a beach. We have run a full Anand Karaj at the Fairmont Banff Springs, with the ceremony in Mt. Stephen Hall and 160 guests staying on property, and a Hindu wedding at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria with 180 guests, the Mehndi and Sangeet at the Delta across the road and a ferry arranged for the wedding party.
Canada solves problems the Caribbean cannot. There is no visa question for Indian passport holders already resident in Canada. Elderly relatives who cannot manage a long-haul flight can attend. Indian catering is available at a standard the resorts abroad struggle to match. And the buildings themselves — castle hotels in the Rockies, a harbourfront landmark — give you a wedding that does not look like anyone else's.
The trade-off is cost per room night and a short season.
Calgary (YYC) is roughly ninety minutes from Banff by road. Victoria (YYJ) takes short flights from Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary and Toronto, or the ferry from Vancouver. Both are straightforward for guests already in North America.
Legal marriage in Alberta and British Columbia is straightforward for residents and visitors, requiring a marriage licence obtained in the province and a registered officiant. Unlike Mexico, a religious ceremony performed by a registered officiant can be the legal marriage.
Guests travelling from India require a Canadian visitor visa, which should be started at least four months out. Guests from the US, UK and EU require an eTA or are visa-exempt. This is the main planning constraint on a Canadian wedding with an international guest list.
